Dumbing Down on Piracy

Not so much discussed in the press this week was the alleged move of major record labels teaming with UK Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to crack down on piracy. In a campaign to reduce the losses of the record labels, there is no benefit to the users. Above all, our privacy will be invaded when other more appropriate measures could be taken.

It comes down like this: if you have downloaded illegally a song from the Internet, you will receive a letter from Virgin Media and a record label, warning you about the legal dangers of doing so.

How is this possible? Well, ISP will give out our private data (is there a consent or some small print?) to these companies that will send out this letters.

So the main concern are the companies that make billions of pounds yearly and losing some more (because of piracy) not the children exposed into pornography on the Internet.

Why don’t the ISPs provide data of people that are visiting child porn? Cause that would be invasion of privacy? But if they do it to find illegal downloaders is not? Still figuring out this double standard…

Meanwhile, Harry is talking about this also, but from a different angle.
